  • aka limp home mode used in automotive industry
  • a safety feature of electronic engine management controlled by ECU
  • once ECU diagnoses critical error in system, it switches off unnecessary devices and reduces engine power output in order to avoid further damage to car system
  • if not critical error, ECU usually allows car user to "limp" into nearest service
